Requirements:

Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Pay the initial fee for certification
  • Baccalaureate degree, except as provided in Kentucky Revised Statues 309.084
  • Obtained a master's degree if required by Kentucky Revised Statues 309.084
  • 6,000 hours of board-approved experience working with alcohol or drug dependent persons; 300 hours of direct supervision by a certified alcohol and drug counselor who has at least 2 years of post-certification experience
  • 270 classroom hours of board-approved curriculum
  • Passed written exam approved by the ICRC
  • Oral exam
  • 2 letters of reference from certified alcohol and drug counselors
  • Signed an agreement to abide by the standards of practice and code of ethics approved by the board
  • 6 hours of ethics training
  • 2 hours of training in the transmission, control, treatment, and prevention of the human immunodeficiency virus
  • Submit a Case Presentation on the form included in the application packet

Requirements:

Certified Prevention Professional (CPP):

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2,000 hours prevention work experience
  • 150 hours direct supervision
  • 150 hours training:
    • 100 prevention specific
    • 50 ATOD specific (Ethics training; 6 hours/AIDS/HIV training - 4 hours)
  • ICRC/AODA certification prevention professional written exam
  • Recertification: Every 2 years with 60 contact hours of training or 6 CEU's

Prevention Associate:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1,000 hours in human services field
  • Involvement in a human service coalition
  • 45 hours ATOD specific training:
    • ATOD early identification or screening - 3 hours
    • Psychopharmacology - 3 hours
    • ATOD & violence - 3 hours
    • Impact of ATOD on systems - 3 hours
    • Strategies for working with target population - 6 hours
    • Ethics - 6 hours
    • Technology of what is prevention - 4 hours
    • HIV/AIDS - 4 hours
    • 12 hours face-to-face consultation with a CPP

The Prevention Associate is designated for a two-year period. To qualify for renewal, applicants must earn 20 hours of ATOD prevention specific training and submit the appropriate forms.
